In 2007 Claire Lomas was thrown from her horse, breaking her neck, back, and ribs, and puncturing her lung. It left her paralyzed from the chest down. On May 8th, she completed the London Marathon after 16 days. She did so with the assistance of a 'bionic suit' that helps people with lower-limb paralysis walk and stand. Lomas entered the marathon to raise money for spinal research and she did jus t that, raising almost $130,000. Official rules state that she won't get a medal or have her time entered officially because the race must be completed on the same day. However, she still gets a special trophy and 15 other runners that also completed the marathon gave her their medals as well - her victory lies entirely elsewhere though.
